House by the Sea
Foto: ©Manuel Bougot, E.1027. Text: Katrin Trautwein, ©ktCOLOR 2024. Literatur: Farben für die Sinne: Eileen Grays Farben im Haus am Meer. kt.COLOR, 2022.
This sensual color was Eileen Gray's white in E.1027 - the soft, warm, light color of the pebbles on the beach in the bay in front of her house by the sea. The repetition of the color on the many light surfaces in the interior created a seamless transition between the interior spaces and the landscape. Eileen Gray's color transported the Mediterranean mood, but not the glaring brightness from the outside in. This harmony was suppressed after 1938 in the Salon, when Le Corbusier and Jean Badovici painted the rooms much lighter in preparation for Le Corbusier's color-intensive wall paintings. Gray used this natural white as a mirror to reflect the light moods from outside. “Formulas,” she wrote, “are nothing, life is everything. And life is both heart and mind.” Her choice of a white for the house reflects this conviction: This is evident in the richness of this luminous color. An achromatic white would not have sufficed, but this light, sandy color is full of sensuality and life. It is ideal for spaces and facades destined to radiate calm, tranquility, and an intimate connection to nature.

The luminous blue vaulted ceiling of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua was created with natural ultramarine, a hue so radiant it seems to emit light from the vault itself.

How our colors are made

The pigment ultramarine, meaning "beyond the sea," was originally derived from the semi-precious gemstone lapis lazuli. The finest lapis stones were sourced from Afghanistan, a region beyond the Mediterranean, inspiring its name. This deep, magical blue can also be synthesized using China clay, calcite, and sulfur, resulting in a purer, more vibrant shade. Today, many iconic works of art rely on this synthetic, mineral-based pigment. Similarly, Karl Friedrich Schinkel's stage design for the Queen of the Night's Hall in Mozart’s The Magic Flute (1816) was crafted using lapis lazuli. In the 1950s, Yves Klein’s monochrome masterpieces made synthetic ultramarine blue
