The color "Viennese Red," developed for the newly designed Figlmüller Café am Dom, is color designer Monika Heiss's interpretation of BWM Architects' vision to bring the traditions of Viennese coffee houses into the modern era. The challenge was to find a deep, luxurious red with a glossy finish that would avoid any sense of nostalgia and create a modern, urban space combining the Viennese coffeehouse tradition with the Italian flair of early espresso bars. Le Corbusier's Ocre Rouge was too dark; however, lightening Ocre Rouge with Kalypso Red resulted in this color. It is deep and complex regardless of the gloss. This brilliant, earthy red plays with light reflections and mirrors the architectural concept. The result is a space that is simultaneously dark and light, rich and bold. The full red spectrum that appears in the highlights combines nostalgia with visions of the future, creating a timeless, urban, playful, and sensual ambiance.

The pigment ultramarine, meaning "beyond the sea," was originally derived from the semi-precious gemstone lapis lazuli. The finest lapis stones were sourced from Afghanistan, a region beyond the Mediterranean, inspiring its name. This deep, magical blue can also be synthesized using China clay, calcite, and sulfur, resulting in a purer, more vibrant shade. Today, many iconic works of art rely on this synthetic, mineral-based pigment.
